Brazil spans UTC-3 to UTC-5. Most of the population, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba and Florianópolis, sits at UTC-3 (Brasília Time), which is one to two hours ahead of US Eastern Time depending on US daylight saving.

The practical result is 6 to 8 hours of overlap with a standard US workday. That is the single most consequential fact in the nearshore argument, and it is worth more than the cost saving.

Brazil abolished daylight saving time in 2019, so the offset does not shift on the Brazilian side. The gap changes only when the US moves its clocks.

Roughly 93% of Brazil’s population lives in the UTC-3 zone, and every major tech hub is in it. For hiring purposes, treat Brazil as UTC-3 unless you are specifically sourcing from Manaus.

East Coast teams get near-total overlap. A Brazilian engineer’s day sits almost entirely inside the New York workday.

West Coast teams get a solid afternoon block. Roughly 09:00 to 14:00 Pacific overlaps with the Brazilian workday, which covers standup, review and most synchronous decisions if you schedule them before 2 PM Pacific.

Why this matters more than the hourly rate

Asynchronous work is not free. It has a specific, measurable cost: every blocked question costs a full day of throughput.

An engineer who hits a blocker at 10 AM in a 12-hour-offset time zone asks the question, goes to sleep, and receives the answer the following morning. One question, one day. Across a two-week sprint with a handful of blockers, that is a meaningful percentage of the sprint spent waiting.

At 6 to 8 hours of overlap, the same question is answered in twenty minutes.

How to actually use the overlap

Having the hours is not the same as using them.

  1. Put synchronous work in the overlap and nothing else. Standups, reviews, planning and decisions go in the shared window. Deep work goes outside it, on both sides.
  2. For West Coast teams, front-load the day. Anything requiring a Brazilian engineer should be scheduled before 2 PM Pacific.
  3. Set a blocker escalation rule in hours, not days. “Escalate anything blocking you for more than four working hours” is enforceable when you share a workday. It is meaningless when you do not.
  4. Do not schedule recurring meetings at the edges. A 9 AM Pacific standup is 1 PM in São Paulo, which is fine. A 4 PM Pacific meeting is 8 PM in São Paulo, which is how you lose people quietly.
  5. Write down the working hours in the contract. Not to control them, but so both sides know when live collaboration is expected.

One thing to watch

Brazil does not observe daylight saving. The US does. Twice a year the offset shifts by an hour, in March and November, and neither side is expecting it.

Recurring meetings scheduled in one party’s local time will silently move for the other. Set calendar invites in a named time zone rather than a fixed offset, and send a reminder the week the US clocks change.
